Thank you for your review of The Tempest at the Globe. Lucky you. Yet I wonder was that really said by Prospero “That if you now beheld them, your affections would become tender”? B/c in the original it is Ariel who says that.

Well now that’s embarrassing, because of course it is. Shows you how much I was concentrating on Ariel’s reply - although it makes it even more unsettling - he’s describing all these emotions and then doesn’t even feel them. I’ve seen it done as wistful in another production, but there was definitely something more sinister about Colin Morgan’s Ariel…

The Tempest was amazing

I love Shakespeare, and I love the Globe, but this year’s Tempest may actually be the best yet. The whole cast were brilliant, but Colin Morgan really stole the show. The way he moved (he had a parkour trainer), and the way he spoke - he’s one of those rare actors who really transforms on stage, and there’s no evidence of the actor underneath - he was Ariel.

He was so delightfully non-human and creepy. He hardly blinked, he genuinely looked like he was possibly going to murder all the cast later in their sleep. When Ariel states “That if you now beheld them, your affections would become tender” and Prospero asks if his emotions are affected so … Ariel just replies “Mine would sir, were I human” - so perfectly otherworldly, more sinister than wistful here, although it can be done as the latter.

And the heartbreaking and effortlessly disturbing “Do you love me Master, no?” Ariel asks, and you just see Prospero’s hesitation before he replies. I’m gushing now, but I love good theatre, it’s so rewarding.

Thoroughly worth it, especially at a fiver for groundling tickets.
